Stay Cozy and Save Big with S&L Prime A/C & Heating Systems

Fall HVAC Maintenance Checklist

Although you may be ready for fall, your HVAC system may not. The last thing you want to happen is to deal with a faulty heating system during a cold week in the fall and winter. By being proactive and following this fall HVAC maintenance checklist, you can save yourself some trouble and ensure a cozy, problem-free winter.

Change the Furnace Air Filter

One of the most important things you can do for your HVAC system this fall is to replace the furnace’s air filters. Over time, your furnace’s air filter becomes clogged and dirty. As a result, your HVAC system becomes less efficient. That can lead to higher energy bills and excess strain on the system. Prevent this from happening to you by replacing your furnace’s air filters.

Clear Dust and Debris from Outdoor HVAC Units

Most people focus on the indoor portion of their HVAC system when preparing for the fall. However, it’s important to check and clear out debris from the outside part of the system too. If you have an outdoor HVAC unit, be sure to keep it free of debris throughout the year. During the fall, this can mean clearing leaves, dirt, sticks, and other debris off the unit every week.

Clean HVAC Ducts and Registers

Keeping your entire HVAC system clean will help keep the system running smoothly and keep energy bills low. It’s a good idea to clean out the air ducts and registers often. In addition to dust cleaning these places, it’s even more beneficial to wipe them down with soap and water, especially in the fall and winter when you are most likely to use your heating system.

Test Your Thermostat

Sometimes, temperature control issues can be directly related to a faulty thermostat. If your home has smart thermostats, you can check them by running a system test using the instructions from the thermostat manufacturer. If your home has standard thermostats, enlist the help of a family member or friend to stand by the furnace while you slowly turn the thermostat from off to a higher temperature. Both the thermostat and the furnace should make a sound when this happens.

Have Your HVAC System Serviced by a Professional

It’s recommended that you have your HVAC system serviced by a professional HVAC company at least once a year. The best time to schedule your annual HVAC maintenance service is in the fall. During this service, a technician will check for problems, adjust loose bolts, do a combustion efficiency test, and address any other issues you may have with your HVAC system.
