Getting Your HVAC System Ready for Winter

Fall is an ideal time to do routine maintenance on your HVAC system. That’s because it’s not too cool and it’s not too hot, so you give yourself time to correct any potential problems before the cold weather arrives. If you don’t prepare your HVAC system for winter, you could be left stranded inside your home without heat. So to prevent this from happening, follow these tips for getting your HVAC system ready for the winter.

Change Filters

Your HVAC unit has filters to prevent dust, contaminants, and other debris from entering your airways. Over time, an HVAC filter will become dirty and clogged, and not be able to do its job properly. If the airflow is blocked by debris, your heating system may be less efficient. That’s why this simple task is so important for the longevity of your HVAC unit and the comfort of your home.

Test Your Heater, Furnace, and Thermostat

It’s always a good idea to test your system before you really need it. To test your system, set the thermostat to a temperature you would normally use in the winter. You should hear the system turn on and feel the heat coming from the vents. If your system doesn’t do these things or doesn’t work properly, you can have an HVAC professional check your system and fix any problems before it gets cold.

Cover the A/C Condenser Unit

If you don’t plan on using your AC throughout the winter, be sure to winterize it. You can do so by covering the AC unit with any kind of protective, waterproof cover. Doing this will protect the condenser unit from the cold, ice, and other harsh winter weather conditions and make it last longer. Throughout the winter, clear the cover of ice and snow as they accumulate.

Consider Installing a Smart Thermostat

If you still have a traditional thermostat, it may be a good idea to look into getting a smart, programmable thermostat. These types of thermostats are easy to use and save you money on energy costs. Smart thermostats allow you to easily set temperatures when you’re home and when you’re away. That means if you want to lower the heat when you aren’t home, a smart thermostat will allow you to do so easily and conveniently.

Have Your HVAC System Serviced

While it’s recommended that you have your HVAC system professionally serviced at least once a year, it’s a good idea to have it professionally serviced twice a year – once in the spring and once in the fall. This allows you to rest assured that your HVAC system is working properly and efficiently. Having an MD HVAC professional look over and service your HVAC system makes sure that there aren’t any surprise breakdowns in the winter and that your home is comfortable all year long.
