The heat pumps in our homes are some of the most underappreciated modern luxuries around today. When working properly, a heat pump will efficiently distribute heat around your home during the winter months, and will keep it cool during the summer. When a heat pump malfunctions, you’ll notice it right away, but smart homeowners know how to keep their heat pump running well. Today we wanted to share how you can keep the heat pump in your home running well.
Don’t Make Large Adjustments to Your Thermostat at One Time
We’ve all wanted to do it at some time or other, we’ve walked in from outside, only to discover that our home feels either too hot or too cold. Of course it’s ok to make adjustments to your thermostat, but you should never make an adjustment of more than a few degrees at one time. Raising or lowering the temperature on your thermostat too much at one time can switch on your backup heater, which is very inefficient. It’s a much better idea to make multiple smaller adjustments over time.
Check Your Air Filters Regularly
One of the easiest things you can do to improve the efficiency of your heating pump is to routinely check your air filters. A clogged air filter won’t allow heat or air through very easily, which means that your heat pump will have to work harder. We recommend doing this at least once a month. By cleaning out the air filters in your home or business regularly, you’ll be helping your heating pump run much more efficiently.
Outdoor Coils Need to Be Cleaned Too
If your heating system has coils set up outside, you’ll need to make sure they stay relatively clean. You only want to clean the coils on warm days, as doing so on a cold day could lead to your coils freezing. You also want to ensure there is good airflow, so cut down any plants that have become overgrown, and move anything else that may be in the way.
