What to Look for in a New HVAC System

Your home’s HVAC system is always working hard to make sure that you and your family are comfortable inside your house. These systems can be big investments, so you’ll want to make sure you’re getting the best one for your home. Here are some things to look for when buying a new heating and cooling system.

High SEER rating (and Other Ratings)

HVAC systems have improved over the years so it’s likely that the system that you had installed 10-20 years ago isn’t as efficient as the ones that are currently on the market. Nowadays, it’s all about energy efficiency, and there are rating systems that determine the level of efficiency of different types of heating and cooling systems. Take a look at the system ratings, such as the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), HSPF, AFUE, and EER, when considering which HVAC system to buy.

Size

Size matters when it comes to an HVAC system. If you get one that is too big, you’ll waste money monthly paying for an system that consumes more energy to condition less space. If you get one that is too small, your home will be inadequately cooled or heated. Talk to your local Baltimore heating and cooling specialist to determine the right size for your home.

Capacity

Will your new HVAC system be able to effectively heat and cool the space in your home? It should! The capacity of an HVAC system is measured by BTUs (British Thermal Units). This is equal to the amount of heat required to raise a pound of water by 1-degree F. Both input and output capacity is measured using this system. In general, the higher the BTU rating, the greater the capacity.

Programmable Thermostat Compatibility

Thermostats have come a long way over the past 10 years. You can now control your heating and cooling from virtually anywhere with a smart programmable thermostat. These can save you money on your monthly energy bills by allowing you to turn on heating or cooling when you’re home, and turn it off when you’re not. This can also help you prolong the life of your HVAC system. Ensure that the heating and cooling system you buy is compatible with a modern, programmable thermostat.
